The Players

There is quite a bit of instruction material (especially video tape) available these days. Since most of my instruction occured in the "pre-technology" years of this century I have no first hand knowledge of the effectiveness of any taped instruction. At any rate, instruction is a personal thing. I would recommend a competent instructor to at least kick start the learning process.

Instead, I'll just pass along the following resources and suggest that the learning player seek out the opinions of those who have already made the journey:

Mel Bay has a considerable catalog of video and print instruction as well as tablature.

And speaking of tablature, let me put forth high praise for the Stacy Phillips transcribed and annotated tab of The Great Dobro ® Sessions CD. It is Mel Bay Publication MB95771. It is fine.

I'll also recommend The Dobro Book by Stacy Phillips (Oak Publications 00183-4). My copy is ancient but remains a great resource for all things resophonic. It has great stories, hints and tab. Here is Stacy's new web site.

Thanks to Stacy Phillips for his contributions to this page.

Acutab is renoun for tablature for all stringed instruments. Check out the link for tab of the three Rob Ickes solo CD's. Rob is one of the contemporary "great ones" and his style is widely studied.

Orville Johnson is a great out-of-the-box player known for his unique approach to the instrument. Orville has released his instructional DVD, Beginning Dobro. The disc features digital video, CD quality sound and Orville's straight forward approach for beginners.

The DVD can be bought from Orville directly at:
